Alwyn is a Yondan (4th Grade Black Belt) Freestyle Judo and Sandan (3rd Grade Black Belt) JSA Judo
Our approach is to develop well-rounded, skilled and confident athletes in both sport and self-defense.
All areas of skill are emphasized. Skill training in many techniques used in Judo, Sambo, sport Jiu-Jitsu, BJJ and submission grappling such as throws, takedowns, arm locks, chokes and strangles, hold-downs and leg locks are emphasized. Self-defense skills such as wrist and arm locks (arm bars), striking techniques, and specialized personal safety skills are emphasized in our self-defense classes.
Ritoru Tatsu Judo Club, Freestyle Ritoru Tatsu Fight Club and Freestyle Judo South Africa Alliance Fight Club offers a wide range of training opportunities in grappling and self-defense for anyone who is interested in studying Kodokan Judo. Ritoru Tatsu Judo Club is one of the leading training centers in the South Africa and has been instrumental in the development and growth of Kodokan Judo in this area since 2005. Our approach is to offer the best quality coaching possible in an atmosphere where everyone is welcome. Our group of coaches, headed by Alwyn Grobbelaar, are some of the best technicians and teachers in the South Africa. We believe that if YOU are successful, WE are successful!!.
What is Freestyle Judo? Freestyle Judo is Kodokan Judo played under a different framework. Points are awarded for changes of control like a guard pass as well as throws. Matches can be won by Ippon through throws or submissions but players can also win by accumulating points from throws or groundwork techniques. Pins don't win (although they do get lots of points); submissions do. Throws that grab the legs are permitted.
